UpdatedSep 21, 2011 2:48 PM ETThe Cleveland Browns feel optimistic after splitting their firsttwo games, and their defense is a big reason why.The Browns can finish Sunday above .500 through three games forthe first time in nine years as they host the winless MiamiDolphins.Cleveland's defense shouldered much of the blame for a 27-17loss to Cincinnati on Sept. 11, getting caught off-guard andallowing the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter while still inthe huddle. However, that unit has otherwise been solid over thefirst two weeks, allowing 289.5 yards per game - sixth-best in theNFL.The Browns (1-1), who are tied for the AFC lead with six sacks, took advantage of a Peyton Manning-less Indianapolis team lastSunday to win 27-19. In the second half, they forced threethree-and-outs, an interception and a fumble.Last season, Cleveland allowed 350.1 yards per game to rank 22ndin the league, but an influx of young talent and new defensivecoordinator Dick Jauron seem to have helped.Phil Taylor, the 21st overall pick in this year's draft, issecond on the team behind D'Qwell Jackson with 11 tackles - sevensolo. Jabaal Sheard, the team's second-round pick, had fivetackles, a sack and a fumble recovery last week."I think they did a good job," coach Pat Schurmur said of thetwo defensive rookies, "and they're getting better. I'm seeingimprovement each week."The Browns, who were winless after three games the last threeseasons and finished no better than 5-11, are looking to start 2-1for the first time since 2002. That's the only season in which theymade the playoffs since returning to the NFL in 1999."Players just taking our own initiative and put our foot down,we're not going to take this anymore," safety T.J. Ward said."We're not going to be run-of-the-mill and accept theselosses."Thanks to the defense, the pressure on Colt McCoy hasn't been asgreat. The second-year quarterback, though, is coming off a solidperformance as he went 22 of 32 for 211 yards and one touchdownwith no interceptions.Nearly a quarter of his completions this year have gone toPeyton Hillis, who has 10 catches for 53 yards but is averagingjust 3.4 yards per carry. That's a yard lower than his breakout2010 season, when he ran for 1,177 yards, though he did rush for 94and two TDs last Sunday.McCoy and Hillis have a chance to pad their numbers againstMiami (0-2), which is giving up a league-worst 483.5 yards pergame. The Dolphins have been particularly bad against the pass.Opposing quarterbacks have a 120.4 rating against them - worst inthe AFC. After allowing Tom Brady to throw for 517 yards, they letMatt Schaub complete 21 of 29 passes for 230 yards and two TDs in a23-13 loss to Houston last Sunday. This is the fifth time in six years Miami has started 0-2, butthe Dolphins play their next three on the road, where they went 6-2last year."Us being in an 0-2 hole, it's kind of like a must win," safetyYeremiah Bell said. "We've got to turn this thing around. It's onthe players."While the defense is carrying much of the blame, the offensealso has struggled with the beleaguered Chad Henne under center. After passing for 416 yards in the opener, he was mediocre lastSunday, going 12 of 30 for 170 yards with one touchdown and oneinterception.Miami has been limited to four TDs in 10 red-zone opportunitiesand has scored just 60 percent of the time, tied for 30th in theleague."As a quarterback, you want to hit the plays down there, youwant to create plays and score touchdowns," Henne said. "It'sdefinitely disappointing down there if we don't get it done."While it was expected Reggie Bush would help the running game,he was overshadowed last Sunday by rookie Daniel Thomas, who had 18carries for 107 yards. Bush had seven touches for 21 yards aftergetting 20 touches in the opener. The Browns have won three straight over the Dolphins, includinga 13-10 victory Dec. 5 on Phil Dawson's 23-yard field goal as timeexpired. Henne threw three interceptions.

UpdatedSep 21, 2011 3:50 PM ETEDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)(Eds: Updates with background, quotes and details. With AP Photos.)By JON KRAWCZYNSKIAP Sports Writer Kevin Williams isn't a screamer. The big Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle is as understated as they come, his low Arkansas baritone almost never rising to a level that would put even the slightest strain on his vocal chords. So when Williams talks about sitting on his couch in his suburban Minneapolis home and ''yelling at the screen,'' you know something must have gone awfully wrong. Watching his team give up 27 combined points in halftime leads to lose the first two games of the season while he was sitting out because of a suspension certainly would qualify.''It was tough. I mean, I want to be out there with the guys,'' Williams said. ''Not to be able to is a terrible feeling. So it was real difficult watching, especially the way it unfolded in both of those games.''He will have a much bigger influence on the outcome of Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions (2-0).Williams finished his two-game suspension for testing positive for a banned diuretic three years ago and rejoined the Vikings at practice on Wednesday. He will still have to play the next two games essentially for free after the league chose to reduce his suspension by two games but fine him an additional two game checks. But that is the furthest thing from Williams' mind right now.''I thought we were fighting for a good cause and had a good case to fight for, but it didn't go in our favor, so we move on and play football,'' he said of the long court battle that ended in the offseason. The Vikings held a 10-point lead in Week 1 at San Diego and a 17-point lead last week against Tampa Bay, only to give both away and fall to 0-2.Not having their six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle in the middle of the line certainly didn't help things. Last week, Bucs running back LeGarrette Blount seemed to wear down the Vikings defense, popping several big runs through the middle of the line in the second half to take some of the heat off quarterback Josh Freeman.Blount barreled for 67 of his 71 yards rushing in the second half, including touchdown runs of 27 and 4 yards to lift the Bucs to the victory.''I think we gave two games away,'' Williams said. ''In this league we can't afford to do that. We've got to get it going this week.''Now all that remains to be seen is how effective Williams can be while playing with a painful case of plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He said the two weeks of rest has helped him feel much better heading into this week, but still thinks he will not be at 100 percent all season long.Teammates say even a slightly hampered Williams will be a welcome sight.''Even when I was in New Orleans, I knew who Kevin Williams is,'' first-year nose tackle Remi Ayodele said. ''He's a great player. He's a great teammate. He helped me out a lot during camp, making sure I knew all my plays and everything when I got down. A lot of vets don't do that. They don't have time for that. You've got to learn yourself. He made sure I knew every call before I got down, so I'm really excited to have him back.''In his first six seasons, Williams earned a reputation as the rare player who is equally effective against the run and rushing the passer.''He's wrecked some games that I've been a part of on the other side,'' Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. ''A lot of respect for him as a player. ... He's a guy that's good against the run, good against the pass, doesn't have a weak spot in his game.''His production dipped last season. He had just one sack, though he did notch a career-high nine tackles for loss, in an uncharacteristically quiet year.Perhaps as important as Williams' production on the field is his presence in the locker room for a team that is on its heels a little after the slow start. Veterans Steve Hutchinson, Donovan McNabb and Jared Allen all spoke up earlier this week to encourage everyone not to panic.Even though Williams isn't the rah-rah type, his words and actions have always carried considerable weight with his teammates. Coach Leslie Frazier said Williams is a player he will lean on to ''get certain things done and communicated.''''He is a quiet guy and his personality is low key, but he's one of those guys that when he does speak up, the entire room listens because of his credibility and how great of a player he is,'' Frazier said. ''But also, he's a very bright guy and has a great feel for people and situations. ... Guys really listen and they try to adhere to his suggestions.''---Follow Jon Krawczynski on Twitter:

UpdatedSep 21, 2011 5:26 PM ETThe Jacksonville Jaguars were hoping to ease rookie quarterbackBlaine Gabbert into the starting lineup, but a lackluster defeatforced them to change their plans. In his first professional start Sunday against the CarolinaPanthers, Gabbert will try to match the spectacular performances offellow rookie Cam Newton and earn something that's so far eludedthe Heisman Trophy winner - an NFL victory. After they traded up to take Gabbert with the 10th overall pick, the Jaguars (1-1) were expected to let the former Missouriquarterback get acclimated to the NFL and the team's offense whilestarter David Garrard played. That process accelerated, however, when the team cut Garrardfollowing a poor preseason, and again after Luke McCown threw fourinterceptions in a 32-3 loss to the New York Jets last Sunday.Under pressure after missing the playoffs in three consecutivecampaigns, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio announced Wednesday thatGabbert would take over."He's got all the confidence in the world," guard Uche Nwanerisaid of Gabbert. "He's got a good swagger about him. He knows whatthe challenge is going to be. I think he'll thrive against thechallenge. He was drafted high and he's itching for an opportunityto get in and make an impact, and now he's getting an opportunityto do that."If Del Rio required any reassurance about his decision, he wouldneed to look no further than this week's opponent.Having gone 2-14 last year, the Panthers were in a seeminglymore desperate situation when they selected Newton with the No. 1pick. With little competition, the former Auburn star took over asthe team's starter and has thrown for 854 yards in his first twogames -second-most in the NFL behind Tom Brady's 940.He's also accounted for five touchdowns, including the team'sonly two rushing scores.Last Sunday, Newton set a single-game franchise record with 432passing yards, but his three interceptions helped Green Bay rallyfrom an early 13-point deficit for a 30-23 win.Newton injured his right ankle in the loss, but he's expected topractice and play this week."We've just got to get it right. We're going to get it right,"he said. "But I'm not the person to just sit up here and say,'Well, we have next time.' I'm not that type of person. I want itright now and I want to get it right now."The Panthers (0-2) are hoping to get their first win with alittle more balance. They've totaled 145 yards on the ground in twogames after averaging more than 100 per game in each of the lastsix seasons.DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, who became the first duoto top 1,110 yards each in 2009, have a combined 74 yards on 30carries.Carolina has passed 83 times and rushed on 48 plays so far thisyear. During their six trips into the red zone last week, thePanthers threw 14 times and ran the ball eight times while comingaway with two touchdowns."We get down inside the 15 and we throw it every time,"offensive tackle Jordan Gross said. "You know I'd like to have 50percent of those be runs. And I don't think (offensive coordinatorRob Chudzinski) is trusting us to get it done right now."I don't think anybody in this organization wants us to rush forunder 100 and throw for over 400 every week, especially withoutpoints to back it up. We've got to do better on the ground."First-year coach Ron Rivera isn't worried, but this weekendhe'll face a team that's allowing 3.2 yards per carry - thesixth-lowest average in the league."I'd be concerned if we weren't throwing for about 400 yards agame," Rivera said. "Since we're converting and making playsdownfield and throwing the ball it's just a matter of time. It'sgoing to happen and when it does it should pop. When it does therun game will be solid."The Jaguars will try to use that run-stopping ability to theiradvantage to record their fourth win in five all-time meetings withthe Panthers, who also joined the NFL before the 1995 season.Jacksonville routed Carolina 37-6 in the most recent matchup in2007, but the Panthers prevailed 24-23 during the previous meetingin Charlotte in 2003 on a touchdown pass with 16 seconds left.Carolina will try to win without linebacker Thomas Davis, whotore the ACL in his right knee for the third time in less than twoyears last Sunday. The Panthers had already lost one of their otherdefensive captains, Jon Beason, for the year because of a tornAchilles' tendon.Jacksonville defensive end Aaron Kampman, who is recovering fromknee surgery, is expected to sit out.

UpdatedSep 21, 2011 4:36 PM ETThe San Diego Chargers' run of AFC West titles ended at fourlast season as the Kansas City Chiefs went from worst to first. While the Chargers have some issues they need to resolve inorder to recapture division supremacy, those pale in comparison tothe problems the Chiefs are facing.San Diego tries to bounce back from a sloppy loss Sunday when ithosts a Kansas City team that has been pummeled in its first twogames and will be without All Pro running back Jamaal Charles forthe rest of the year. After winning the West from 2006-09, the Chargers (1-1)struggled within the division last year and watched as the Chiefsfinished in first place for the first time since 2003. San Diegosplit its two games against Kansas City in 2010 and finished 3-3against West opponents, a mark it knows it must improve upon to getback to the playoffs."We know what these kind of games mean,'' said Philip Rivers, who has thrown for 713 yards and four touchdowns. "Like I said, 3-3last year is not going to get it done. We've got to get off to agreat start in the division, and we get a chance to do that thisweek.''The Chargers appear to have a great chance Sunday consideringthey've not only outscored Kansas City 74-14 in winning the lasttwo meetings at Qualcomm Stadium, but the Chiefs (0-2) also appearto be in a state of disarray.Kansas City has been outscored by 79 points - its worstdifferential through two games in franchise history - and has hadto put three of its top players on injured reserve with tornACLs.Charles, who had the NFL's second-highest rushing total lastseason with 1,467 yards on a remarkable 6.4 yards per carry, torethe ACL in his left knee after taking an awkward step whilefinishing off a run in the first quarter of last Sunday's 48-3 lossat Detroit. The Chiefs on Wednesday officially put the Pro Bowl running backon injured reserve, where he joins tight end Tony Moeaki and ProBowl safety Eric Berry"He was one of the keys to our offense,'' backup running backDexter McCluster said of Charles. "We just have to find a way topull together, pick up the slack, and get this thing moving prettyquick.''Veteran Thomas Jones has proven he can handle a heavy workloadafter running for 896 yards and six TDs last season while logging15 more carries than Charles. But he's a month removed from turning33, and the Chiefs will now need the 23-year-old McCluster - whose94-yard punt return was the difference in a 21-14 win over SanDiego last season - to step up.Jones didn't have much success in two games against the Chargerslast season, running for 40 yards on 14 attempts, while Charlesrushed for 132 yards on 21 carries.Although things are looking bleak for the Chiefs, coach ToddHaley is not ready to give up."The season will not be canceled as far as I know,'' hesaid.San Diego, meanwhile, should be anxious to get back home aftersome self-inflicted wounds Sunday at New England. The Chargerscommitted four turnovers in a 35-21 loss - with running back MikeTolbert's fumble, down six in the fourth quarter, looming thelargest.San Diego, which has trailed by double digits at halftime in itsfirst two games, has six turnovers and only one takeaway."It's a big concern,'' coach Norv Turner said. "It's directlyconnected to one thing. We have got to do a better job of takingcare of the ball. We have to find a way to create turnovers.''San Diego should have better luck forcing turnovers against theChiefs, who lead the league with nine. Matt Cassel, who has notthrown for more than 133 yards and owns a 50.4 quarterback rating,is responsible for five - including four interceptions.Cassel has also struggled in his last three games against theChargers, averaging 114.3 yards with three touchdowns and fourpicks.Rivers has been a bit turnover-prone as well, matching Casselwith four interceptions and a fumble. He figures to have better luck against a Kansas City secondarythat's been torched by Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matthew Stafford - eachthrew four TD passes - but Rivers doesn't need to look further thanhis own numbers against the Chiefs.Rivers has averaged 295.2 yards and posted a 108.0 passer ratingin six games versus Kansas City since 2008 - five victories.
