Cutting sodium consumption could yield considerable health benefits

Study results published in Hypertension indicate that reducing the amount of sodium in the typical US diet could save 280,000 to 500,000 lives during the next decade.Three research groups used three different approaches to analyze the effect of decreased sodium intake on the US population during the next 10 years. The first group examined the direct effects of lower sodium consumption on CVD mortality. The second and third groups assessed indirect effects mediated by BP changes as observed in randomized controlled trials of antihypertensive medications and epidemiological studies, respectively. All groups analyzed these effects in the context of the following scenarios: a gradual uniform reduction of 40% during the next 10 years (scenario A); an instantaneous 40% reduction sustained for 10 years to achieve a population-wide mean of 2,200 mg per day (scenario B); and an instantaneous reduction to 1,500 mg per day sustained for 10 years (scenario C).

Thrombolytic tissue plasminogen activator demonstrated the possibility of being a useful adjunctive treatment for patients with calciphylaxis, according to recent study results.Researchers at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., conducted a retrospective chart review of 15 patients with calciphylaxis (median age at diagnosis, 59 years; 11 women) who were treated between 2002 and 2010. The usually fatal thrombotic condition, affecting up to 4% of long-term dialysis patients, results in ischemia, necrosis and infarction of adipose and cutaneous tissue.

Prolonged ambulatory cardiac monitoring after a cryptogenic ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack appears to be a more effective method for detecting occult atrial fibrillation than standard methods. In the largest randomized trial to evaluate whether longer ECG monitoring is beneficial after stroke, researchers for the EMBRACE trial assigned patients to wear an event-triggered cardiac monitor for up to 30 days or a repeat 24-hour Holter monitor to record AF events. The trial included 572 patients (mean age, 73 years) who had a recent cryptogenic ischemic stroke (63%) or TIA (37%) and no known AF after standard diagnostic interventions that included a negative Holter monitor.

The FDA has given 510(k) clearance to a mobile telemedicine robot for active patient monitoring in certain hospital settings.The RP-VITA Remote Presence Robot, a joint effort between iRobot and InTouch Health, combines autonomous navigation with telemedicine and electronic health records. Designed to facilitate remote doctor-to-patient consults, the robot “maps its own environment and uses an array of sophisticated sensors to autonomously move about a busy space without interfering with people or other objects,” according to an iRobot press release.

Children with egg allergies, even those with severe reactions, safely tolerated split and single doses of seasonal influenza vaccine in a recent study.“Egg allergy should no longer be considered a condition that poses any greater risk in receiving influenza vaccine,” researcher Matthew J.
