Paromomycin effective with or without gentamicin in leishmaniasis

Topical paromomycin alone or and a combination of paromomycin and gentamicin were both efficacious treatments for cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major, according to data from a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine.“We predicted that both formulations would have a similar cure rate for L. major in Tunisia,” Col. Max Grögl, division director of experimental therapeutics at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, told Infectious Disease News. “However, we know that the combination therapy, known as WR 279,396, could hold additional promise for global use since early research showed that it may be effective against the parasitic species found in Central and South America.”

A three-dose or more regimen of sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine for malaria prevention was associated with a higher birth weight among pregnant women in Africa, researchers from the United Kingdom have found.“Our study shows that by providing the drug sufadoxine/pyrimethamine more frequently during pregnancy, a period in a woman’s life when she and her baby are particularly vulnerable to harmful effects of malaria, the period of protection is greatly enhanced and the risk of malaria re-infection in women is reduced,” Feiko ter Kuile, PhD, professor at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, told Infectious Disease News. “We are excited about these findings because there are not that many opportunities for such a cheap and relatively simple intervention to have such a large potential impact on pregnancy outcome.”

Tedizolid phosphate was noninferior to linezolid for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.“The take-home message from the efficacy perspective is that, if approved, tedizolid will be the first antibiotic labeled for a fixed 6-day course of once-daily treatment for severe bacterial skin infections,” Philippe Prokocimer, MD, chief medical officer of Trius Therapeutics, told Infectious Disease News. “From a safety perspective, the study showed a lower number of gastrointestinal adverse events and a lower impact on platelets.”

Plasmodium knowlesiwas the most common cause of severe malaria in patients admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Sabah, Malaysia, according to recent study results. There were no fatalities, which was attributed to the use of artemisinin therapy.“The simian parasite Plasmodium knowlesi is a common cause of human malaria in Malaysian Borneo, accounting for the majority of malaria admissions to several district hospitals throughout Sarawak and Sabah,” the researchers wrote.
