Château de Chenonceau, France
After the Royal Palace of Versailles, it is the most visited château in France.
It's full of really interesting and varied history, such as:
- The first ever fireworks display in France was held here in 1560
- The château was bought by Duke of Bourbon in 1720, who then was so short of money he sold most of the statues to the Palace of Versailles
- In 1864 it was bought by a Scotsman (Daniel Wilson)
- In 1913 it was bought by the Menier family (the famous chocolate makers, Chocolat Menier)
- Parts were used as a hospital in World War I
Château de Chenonceau is located near Tours. For anyone driving from the UK, it is about 3.5 hours from the ferry ports of Le Havre or St Malo, and 5.5 hours from Calais.
